“She was just diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer”
“My aunt has fibromyalgia.”
“My sister has diabetes.”
“I was just diagnosed with Hashimoto’s disease”
“My skin keeps breaking out.”
“My cousin has MS.”
“I suffer from Chronic Fatigue.”
“My son is suffering from kidney failure.”
“I get severe migraines.”
“I suffer from hemorrhoids every now and then”
What do all these statements have in common? Aside from the fact that they are bits ‘n pieces of conversations I hear almost every-single-day, these sentences all have a common tie that binds them together. That tie is that they are labels to conditions, but those conditions are really just a set of symptoms. Cancer is not a final end all, be all, absolute, irreversible diagnosis. It is, however, a scary word that does instill a lot of fear in anyone that hears it applied to themselves or a loved one. It is a word that for some reason makes us believe everything and anything the doctors tell us about it. (Usually, because we don’t have any other information and most rarely question what doctors say). Mainly because that’s what the majority of society would do. Diabetes is not an incurable disease. Acne, eczema, rosacea are not incurable conditions that you need to learn to live with. MS, Cardiovascular disease, Crohn’s Disease, Ulcerative Colitis, hemorrhoids, migraines etc. are all just labels that allopathic (mainstream) medicine has given to a specific set of symptoms. Every single one of these conditions and every other one, are just sets of symptoms of something deeper. That’s it.
“All illnesses and diseases are JUST symptoms. And if they are symptoms of something deeper going on, then we need to be looking at that, rather than trying to treat and get rid of just the symptom. With this kind of thinking, treatment-based thinking, there is no room for healing the body and ridding it of the disease itself. We need to move to a healing-based system and look at the body as a whole, finding the root of the disease – this is the only way to actually rid the body of any condition entirely.”
One of the biggest game changers, for myself, in the whole un-learning/re-learning process with regards to nutrition, health, and healing was the idea that the body is a self-correcting organism. What does that mean exactly?
It means that the body will never do anything to harm itself. It is an intricate, intelligent and an extraordinary organism that only ever works to thrive. Think about that for a second. The body will only ever work to protect itself from dangerous invaders.
So when we hear about the body attacking itself in various auto-immune disease scenarios, this is fallacious; the body is actually trying to rid itself of toxins and acidity, that is what is happening.
The second most significant eye opener was when I learned how disease and illness are created in the body. (Read more on that here).
Once I learned these two wee tidbits of information- things changed, drastically. My whole outlook on health, illness, and disease had been uprooted and transformed. There was a massive paradigm shift. And I mean massive. As they say here in Spain, I had to change the chip.
Unfortunately, this is the biggest challenge I think we face when it comes to healing, our intellectual brains want to take over. We refuse to believe that we can heal our bodies and rid ourselves of disease through just diet and herbs. It just seems too simplistic to say that the body can heal itself just by eating right and using herbs as extra support, doesn’t it? It seems next to impossible to believe that not only can we live on a plant-based diet, or even further a fruit-based diet, but that we can actually thrive and REVERSE disease by doing so. Basically, what happens, is that we get in our own way. Or as my teacher, Dr. Robert Morse would say, we tend over-intellectualize health and we must get out of our heads.
When it comes to proper nutrition and healing the body, we are led to believe various false truths. We are bombarded on all sides, from the food industry to the pharmaceutical industry, to the medical industry, all telling us the same thing. Drink milk, it’s good for you. Guess what? That is not true, it’s actually harmful to you. We hear, “eat meat, we need it to survive!” Also proven not only to be false, but the World Health Organization has recently classified processed meats and deli meats as carcinogenic – putting them in the same category as tobacco and asbestos! Some other common false truths we are often told, “you can’t be healthy on a vegetarian or vegan diet.” And here’s one that will rock your boat, “cancer is incurable.” Also false. “There is no cure for IBD.” False. “There is no cure for diabetes”. False. “You can’t reverse auto-immune disease.” False. I think you might be getting the picture.
Our symptoms are a wake-up call, at least they can be if we choose to listen to them. They are, quite literally, your body calling out for help. From sinus cold to hemorrhoids, to back pain, diabetes, to neurological disorders and auto-immune disease alike- these are all just sets of symptoms and your body is telling you that something is going on, acidity is building up and it is no longer sustainable for it to function as is. The worst thing we can do is suppress this with pills and meds, we need to listen, we need to open our minds to new information and we need to dig deeper. Let’s start looking at the body as a whole, it works much like the engine of your car -if one thing goes wrong, if your brakes fail, if your clutch fails, if your oil needs changing – you will see the symptoms of these issues and if you don’t take care of them, the whole car will start to break down. Your body works in same way.
Let’s start waking up. Let’s trust our inner guidance system and say thank you to each and every symptom we experience, gratitude first, then question and research with an open mind, then experiment and seek out guidance from those that have been walking this path for some time, seek out support from those that support what you feel is right, be open to changing the way you eat and working with your body as a whole rather than treating symptoms and then watch things change, drastically. For the better. Healing will take place and harmony will follow.
